Description

The Saltzman East Memorial Elementary School in Farmingdale New York, grade 5 Horizons students participated in the Odyssey of the Mind Regional competition on Saturday March 10th, 2012. Two teams were presented at the competition.   The teams were coached by JeanMarie Papillo Odyssey Angels  Problem #5 were presented by:(In photo from left to right: Chrissy Gilleran, Hannah Fernandez, Mario Castano, Jeannette Jeavons, Genny Day)In this problem the team created and presented a performance where a group of students traveled throughout one or more team-created places where they encountered negative situations. These “Odyssey Angels” changeded what they found and turned them into positive situations. On their journey, they helped two individuals with different problems and helped save an entire community from a bad situation. One Odyssey Angel was not able to speak, and another had a special team-created power.  This team won third place for its Division, Division 1. Weird Science Problem #2 were presented by:  (In photo from left to right: Floor: Gregory Campisi, Matthew Widmer.  Back Row Alissa Kevan, Hannah Fernandez, Nick Demers)In this problem the team created and presented a performance about a team of scientists on an expedition to uncover the cause of mysterious events. The team selected the location of the expedition from NASA Earth Observatory Photographs . The scientists collected two samples and reported on their findings. The performance also included a technical representation of the mysterious events, the appearance of actually traveling, and a team-created device that the scientists used on the expedition.This team won first place for its Division, Division 1, and is now moving forward in the competition to State level at Binghamton University to compete on March 31st, 2012.

    • They competed at Binghamton University and will be moving on to compete in the World Finals in Ames, Iowa in May!!!!! Congratulations to an INCREDIBLE group of kids lead by an AMAZING teacher!
